PC Components and Applications

What students are expected to learn:
  • Identify PC components/boards/cards that makeup a computer: case, motherboard, keyboard, mouse, monitor, network card, modem card, video card, PCI slots, memory slots, power supply.
  • Identify objects within an operating system, such as, the desktop, taskbar, shortcut icons, My computer, Recycling bin, Network neighborhood, Start menu.
  • Creating new folders and saving files to a specific folderon
  • Copy documents to a folder located on the local hard drive and to the instructor computer via a local area network LAN.
  • Manipulating windows (minimizing, maximizing, restoring, scrolling and moving windows)
  • Use keyboard shortcuts versus the mouse to complete an action.
  • List the applications within Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage, Access, and Publisher.
  • Explain what a web browser is and basic terminology associated with a browser: URL, hyperlink, scrollbar, search engine.
  • Download images from the Internet to a folder on the local hard drive.
  • Use Excel to enter statistical data and calculate their grade throughout the semester.
  • Use PowerPoint to create electronic slideshow presentations.
  • Distinguish between the various objects and toolbars displayed in Microsoft suite applications: standard toolbar, formatting toolbar, menu bar, shortcut icons.
